That old saying “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” is definitely true for a pair of trash collectors in Tampa. Ron Milligan and Kenneth Walker Jr work with Hillsborough County Solid Waste Management and noticed perfectly good bicycles being thrown away. One even had a new tag still on it, and it gave them an idea.
Instead of taking them to use for scrap metal, the men were able to refurbish the bikes, with management’s permission. Milligan and Walker continued to find more bicycles to work on and donated their fixed up bikes to local kids in need through Children’s Services. Their first load was 26 bikes and they’re working on 50 more for their next drop off.
“A lot of kids don’t have the opportunity to have a bike, so if it gives them that small change, it’s a good feeling,” says Milligan.
