Colorado Had Category 3 Strength Winds Last Night

Thankfully we don't get hurricanes in Colorado... Although we do get winds as strong as the tropical storms!

The National Hurricane Center categorizes hurricanes by wind speeds:

  • Category 1: 74-95 mph
  • Category 2: 96-110 mph
  • Category 3: 111-129 mph
  • Category 4: 130-156 mph
  • Category 5: 157+ mph

Well, Peak 6 in Breckenridge had winds up to 116 MPH last night, or that of a category 3 hurricane!

According to 9News, gusts reached nearly 60 mph in parts of Denver County and winds exceeded 90 mph in parts of Boulder and Larimer counties.

In case you were wondering, the state's record of 146 mph gusts on Monarch Pass was set in 2016.
