Kids at a Johnston Elementary in South Carolina are showing their support for a seven-year-old classmate in a creative way. The students are selling paper hearts to help first-grader Lamere Johnson, who’s waiting for a heart transplant. His mom, Contessa Culbreath, says he was diagnosed with hypoplastic heart syndrome while in utero and he had three open heart surgeries by the time he was three.
Now doctors say Lamere needs a new heart and he’s on the transplant list. While he waits, his fellow students are selling paper hearts for $1 each and donating the proceeds to his account at the Children’s Organ Transplant Association. The money will be used for food, travel and other expenses when he gets his new heart. So far, they’ve raised around $2-thousand and local middle and high schools are contributing as well.
"We wanted to get our kids involved and, at the same time, give back to Lamere and his family, because they're so precious to us," explains teacher Makinzie Corley. "As a community and as a school, we want to make sure that this family is prepared for when the doctor calls and says, 'Hey, we've got a heart for him.'"
