A baker in St. Petersburg, Florida, found a sweet way to give back to his community during the pandemic. Mickey Paleologos spent summers in Greece working in his uncle’s bakeries. He picked up the skills and when he moved to the U.S. from South Africa, his dream of opening a restaurant came true.
For nearly two decades, he’s been baking his famous Cosmickey cookies at his restaurant, Mickey’s Cafe and Organics. And when COVID hit, he and his wife Stephanie came up with a way to support frontline workers with their baked goods. He started giving away a cookie for every one he sells and the lucky recipients are healthcare workers and first responders. So far, he’s donated more than 13-hundred of them.
“It lifted them up for a brief three or four seconds, at least they had something sweet to eat and that made their day for them, that minute,” Mickey says. “So we’re just going to continue doing what we can, when we can.”
