The New York Department of Sanitation helped a Bronx woman by rescuing her family photo albums from the garbage. Patricia Turco had to move out of her Bronx apartment after it was damaged in Hurricane Ida. She moved in with her niece, leaving behind her belongings — including the five photo albums containing 125 years worth of family photos.

Turco says her niece’s stepson was cleaning out the apartment and accidentally threw the photo albums in the garbage. "I was angry, extremely upset, hysterical crying,” she says. “The first thing I did was call up the Department of Sanitation, and the Department of Sanitation could not have been more nice."

Sanitation department supervisor Edward Clavelo was able to track down the truck that picked up the trash from the apartment and with help from Turco’s friend, Johnny Rodriguez, find the missing photo albums. This isn’t Clavelo’s first time helping rescue important items from the trash. "The department has a pretty good success ratio — mine is about 60, 70 percent," Clavelo says. "If it's in that truck and we go through every bag, we'll find it."
