THE LIST: Five Quick Facts About Fires

When was the last time you checked your smoke detectors to make sure they're working? If you can't remember, it's been way too long . . .

You're supposed to check them once a month. But a recent poll found two-thirds of us haven't, including 28% who haven't checked them in three months or more. Here are five more quick stats about fires, and the risk factors you should know about . . .

1. Around 90% of us think we could protect ourselves in a fire. But the rest of these stats don't really back that up.

2. 1 in 4 people don't own a fire extinguisher. And 1 in 10 people who do have one don't know where it is right now.

3. 60% have never done a fire drill at home, or talked to their family about what to do.

4. 42% of us haven't cleaned the lint filter in our dryer in a while. Which is a common thing that starts fires.

5. And 1 in 5 people said they blow fuses or trip their breaker at least every few months, which could be a sign your system is overloaded.

The top things that cause electrical fires include: Old wiring . . . bad outlets, appliances, and light fixtures . . . extension cords and power strips that are overloaded . . . and space heaters that are too close to things like curtains.
